HEAVY METAL COMPOSITION OF A WHOLLY COMPOUNDED INDIGENOUS SUPPLEMENTARY FEED FLOUR TO TREAT BURNS

ABSTRACT

Burn injury results from skin contact with heat source such as temperature, electricity, friction, radiation and chemicals which can induce a cascade of physiological responses characterized by hypermetabolism, exacerbating the risk of metabolic derangements. This study aimed to investigate the level of heavy mental constituents of a wholly compounded indigenous supplementary feed flour to treat burn patients. The raw materials are used are rice (Oryza sativa), plantain (Musa Parasidiaca), groundnut (Arachis Hypogaea), soya bean (Glycine Max), catfish (Clarias Gariepinus), and crayfish (Procambarus Clakii) were purchased in Uselu Market in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Aside the groundnut that was roasted, some was soaked and all samples was dried in a hot oven at 80 degree census which is then blended to flour. The formulated supplementary local burn feed was mixed in predetermined portion to obtain a rich flour blend. The result of heavy metal analysis shows that total level of copper (12mg/kg) were the most predominant followed by chromium (0.05mg/kg), lead (0.03mg/kg) and cadmium (0.01mg/kg) which are all below the international level of concern of toxicity. Given the results of the analysis, the flour is safe for treating burn patient cause all the heavy metals in the flour blend are below toxic range.
