ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine the haematology and blood serum biochemical characteristics of West African dwarf goats fed diet containing green and boiled maize husk, cassava leaves and peels, and urea. 25 does were weighed and randomly allocated into 5 dietary treatments consisting of 5 goats per treatment in a completely randomized design. Each animal received the diets ad-libitum for 84 days and the data collected were subjected to one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Blood samples for haematology were analyzed for packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration, red blood cell, white blood cell and mean corpuscular haemoglobin. Results shows there was no significant difference (p>0.05) among the treatments in the packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration, red blood cell, white blood cell and mean corpuscular haemoglobin. Blood samples for the serological analysis were collected in sample bottles without ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA). Alanine aminotransferase, glucose chlorine recorded significant difference (p<0.05) among treatment while Aspartate aminotransferase, globulin, albumin, blood urea nitrogen, total cholesterol, creatinine and total protein recorded no significant difference (p>0.05) among treatments. Maize husk at 50% inclusion level in ruminant diet had no advance effect on the haematology and serum biochemical values of West African dwarf goats. The fact that all reported blood parameters fell within the normal range reported for healthy goats without ill effect on the animal, hence it can be concluded that the diets did not pose any threats to the health of the experimental animals.
