ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to determine the haematological parameters of rabbit bucks administered water extract of ginger lily stem juice at the rabbit’s experimental unit of the University of Benin Farm Project, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. This was achieved by addressing the specific objectives; examine the haematological parameters, the blood Indices values, and the differential white Blood Cells Count of rabbit bucks administered with test extract. The experiment was laid down in a completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated three (3) times. There were four (4) groups of rabbits with each group having 6 rabbits making a total of 24 rabbit bucks. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks (the experiment kicked off when the rabbits were 8 weeks old and terminated when they were 16 weeks old). The data collected for the haematological parameters were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 0.05% level of significance [using General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of SAS System,2004] to determine if any significant (p < 0.05).The stem extract of ginger lily did not have any significant (P>0.05) effect on White blood cells and Platelets count. There was significant (P<0.05) effect on Mean corpuscular volume (MCH) and Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH). There was no significant (P>0.05) effect on neutrophils, Eosinophils, Monocytes and Basophils. Result however, showed a significant (p>0.05) effect on Lymphocytes. The haemoglobin values for bucks on the stem extract were within the normal ranges 10 – 15 g/dl and 10 – 17.5 g/dl. The White blood cells counts obtained in this study (6.20 to 7.02 x109/L) for stem extract of ginger lily were not significant (p>0.05). The result of the differential white blood cells counts showed that there were significant increases (p<0.05) only on the lymphocyte, while the neutrophils, eosinophils, and monocytes of the rabbit bucks. It was concluded that Up to 2.4 ml of Ginger lily water stem extract can be administered to growing rabbits without any adverse effects on their haematological characteristics. It was recommended that that farmers can administer water extract of ginger lily stem juice to their rabbits without any detrimental effect.
