GROWTH RESPONSE OF Amaranthus hybridus AFTER AMENDMENT WITH ORGANIC FERTILIZER DEVELOPED FROM FOOD WASTES

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to access the growth response of Amaranthus hybrids after amendment with organic fertilizer developer from food waste. Soil samples were collected from the botanic garden of the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, University of Benin. Prior to use, the soil was analyzed for physicochemical characteristics and sieved to remove debris. Microbial inoculants were introduced to the fertilizer to increase the composition and diversity of microbes. The experiment was conducted was a potted field experiment. Twenty-six (26) bowls were filled with soil and divided into 4 groups and two bowls used as controls. The four groups were treated with yeast-based fertilizer, yoghurt-based fertilizer, cassava-based fertilizer and water-based fertilizer respectively soil untreated with fertilizer was used as control. Seeds were sown per plot and growth analysis was take at week 5, 6 and 7 of growth. The results obtained from this study confirmed the beneficial effects of organic fertilizer in plant growth. Plant height ranged from 51.6 – 91.7cm, number of leaves ranged from 31-43, and leaf area ranged from 53.5 – 172.8 cm2 as compared to the control. This study therefore concluded that organic fertilizer has the potential to enhancer the growth and yield of vegetables.
