ABSTRACT
The growth performance of various mushroom species was investigated by utilizing aqueous seed extract derived from Greenwayodendron suaveolens, a plant known for its bioactive compounds, as supplement. This study aimed to explore the potential of utilizing this extract as a growth stimulant for selected mushrooms. The research methodology involved the preparation of the aqueous seed extract, followed by controlled experimentation with chosen mushroom species (Marasmiellus inoderma, Pleurotus ostreatus and Ganoderma lucidum). Growth parameters, including mycelia growth extension, biomass, density and average mycelial growth rate are meticulously monitored and compared against control groups. The experimental design employed various concentrations of the extract to gauge its impact on the mushrooms' growth dynamics. Results indicated that the application of the aqueous seed extract negatively influenced the growth performance of both Marasmiellus inoderma and Pleurotus ostreatus. Their mycelial growth rate was significantly redundant in the treated substrates compared to the controls. While results indicated that the application of the aqueous seed extract positively influenced the growth performance of Ganoderma lucidum. The mycelial growth rate was significantly enhanced in the treated substrates compared to the controls, suggesting the presence of growth-promoting compounds within the extract. Furthermore, the study investigates the mechanisms underlying the observed effects, delving into the potential bioactive compounds present in the extract and their interaction with mushroom physiology. Insights gained from this analysis contribute to a better understanding of the extract's mode of action and its relevance in mushroom cultivation.
