ABSTRACT
Cowpea is an essential component of the cropping systems in the drier regions ofthe tropics and of vital importance to the livelihood of millions of people in Sub-Sahara Africa. Chemical pesticides are successful at removing pests, but they frequently have detrimental side effects on humans, the environment, and beneficial insects. The specific objective of this study was to produce cowpea seeds without pesticides. The seeds were required by the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry for research purpose. The second objective was to compare the growth of 11 cowpea varieties produced without pesticides.The pot experiment was carried out in the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin. The study was conducted using a CRD (Completely Randomized Design) consisting of 11 treatments and 3 replications. The growth variables measured were plant height, leaf width, leaf length leaf area,dry matter weight. Significant differences was measured in plant height and leaf length. All cowpea varieties grew well without pesticide treatment.
