GROWTH INFLUENCE OF SELECTED GRASS SPECIES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOIL SEED BANK

ABSTRACT

Global conservation efforts prioritize the protection and restoration of ecosystems for long-term viability. The soil seed bank is critical to this, as it supports plant communities and ecosystem stability. The impacts of grasses on the development of plants in soil seed banks were explored in this study. In varied quantities of tillers per container, five grass species (Axonopus Compressus, Panicum maximum, Sporobolus pyramidalis, Setaria barbata, and Eleusine indica) were added to soil samples. There was also a control group with no new grass species. The first setup consisted of one tiller per container for each plant variety, followed by three tillers per container, three tillers per container, and then seven tillers per container for subsequent replicates.  The goal of this study was to evaluate the rate at which the introduction of grass species would affect the growth of plants in the soil, as well as how an increase in grass species population would interact with the development of other plants. The study's findings revealed considerable differences in the growth and development of grass species and other plants in soils. Sporobolus pyramidalis significantly increased seed bank growth, whereas Eleusine indica inhibited it. Allelochemical synthesis, which is more common in larger grass populations, is thought to be the primary cause of inhibition. This highlights the necessity of limiting non-indigenous plant introductions in order to safeguard soil's natural seed banks and sustain plant diversity in the environment, as most grasses are potential growth disruptors in other plants.
