ABSTRACT
This project evaluated the growth characteristics of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes [Mart.] Solms) in nutrient enriched water . The ability of Eichhornia. Crassipes to remove nitrates/nitrites and phosphorus from nutrient enriched water: to determine the effect of nutrient enriched water on the growth of E. crassipes and to determine the removal efficiency of nutrients by E. crassipes from nutrients enriched water were all analyzed extensively in this study. The removal efficiency of Eichhornia crassipes in nutrient enriched water was also tested and the values showed that water hyacinth had over 85% removal efficiency. The concentration of nutrients were replicate. These replicates were taken to the laboratory. The growth parameters such as fresh weight , dry weight, plant diameter and average height were all used to determine the growth of Eichhornia crassipes in nutrient enriched water. Furthermore, physicochemical parameters such as electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids , pH value , phosphorus, nitrates/nitrites were used to determine the amount of nutrients induced in the water samples. The results using these various parameters described the ability of Eichhornia crassipes to grow successfully in nutrient enriched water.
