GROUNDWATER QUALITY CHARACTERISATION IN WARRI METROPOLIS USING GEOCHEMICAL METHODS

ABSTRACT

Groundwater samples collected from Warri metropolis were subjected to physico-chemical and heavy metal characterisation to determine the potability of the waters for domestic consumption. Ten samples were collected from different parts of the metropolis and analysed for the heavy metal concentration, pH and other physicochemical parameters. pH for the water samples ranged from 6.45-7.5, indicating a slightly acidic to neutral water. Other parameters include electrical conductivity, 420µ/cm to 1015µ/cm, total dissolved solids, 410mg/l - 707mg/l, total hardness, 125mg/l – 328mg/l, chlorine, 1.70mg/l – 9.95mg/l and sodium, 0.28mg/l – 4.00mg/l. Heavy metal concentration ranged from 0.22mg/l to 0.42mg/l for iron, 0.01 to 0.04mg/l for lead, 0.04mg/l for nickel and 0.02mg/l for cadmium. The high chlorine concentrations indicate that the groundwater in these areas have been contaminated. Concentration maps generated for the area for some parameters show the trend in the composition of such parameters, high concentrations of the iron were detected around the central part of the study area. Lead, nickel and cadmium were also detected in the area with lead and cadmium being above the permitted threshold of WHO and NIS.
