ABSTRACT

This research work seeks to highlight cartoons as a prominent feature of newspaper in Nigerian print media which serves as a tool for communication. The study aims at enlightening newspaper readers that cartoons goes beyond entertaining, but also educating, informing and also the use of discourse employed by the cartoonist. The significance of the study to linguistic is that its findings will help to provide a clear understanding of the meaning of cartoons as portrayed in newspaper.

 The method of data collection was basically based on newspaper document as its primary source of data and relevant information from textbooks, articles and websites as its secondary source of data. However, a corpus data of 15 cartoons in which 13 are political cartoons and 2 are funny cartoons were carefully selected from Vanguard newspaper for the study. The Perceptual Theory of Kuiper (1984) and Competence and Performance Theory of Chomsky (1965) were adopted for the study. The data analysis for the study shows the satirical concept embedded in cartoons and the language use in these cartoons. The study reveals the hidden message which enable readers arrive at the accurate meanings of cartoons in newspaper. In conclusion, cartoons are vital tools for effective communication that carries hidden messages which reflects the happenings in the society.
