ABSTRACT
Glomerular filtration rate is equal to the total of the filtration rates of the functioning nephrons in the kidney.GFR is usually accepted as the best overall index of kidney function.It is an important part of renal function which helps in eliminating waste materials and in maintaining fluid electrolyte balance. A clinician or medical laboratory can estimate GFR from a person’s serum creatinine level. In most healthy people, the normal GFR is 120 mL/min/1.73 m2 or higher. It declines gradually with age, even in people without kidney disease. However, there appears to be substantial variation among individuals and the reasons for decline are unknown. Several studies have speculated that blood group phenotype and hemoglobin genotypes have effects on the glomerular filtration rate of normotensive young adults. The knowledge of this study will be important in describing normal and abnormal values of glomerular filtration rate among ABO blood group phenotypes and hemoglobin genotypes. The research was aimed at estimating glomerular filtration rate using 12 hours urine collection in different blood group phenotype and hemoglobin genotype in normotensive young adults. . A total of one hundred and thirty-nine (139) subjects between the ages of 18-30 years were recruited for this study. Tile grouping method was used to determine the ABO blood groups while electrophoresis of the different hemoglobin was ascertained. Both plasma and urine Creatinine level were ascertained using Jaffe’s principle.The results show that there was no significant difference in the parameters studied among different blood groups between male and female subjects except for height and crcl(GFR) distribution which both showed significant difference in male and female blood group A respectively (p<0.05). In conclusion this study has shown that one’s blood group does not affect his/her glomerular filtration rate except for blood groups.
