SUMMARY
The popular notion that terrorism in the north is a marker of resistance to the takeover of power by a Christian south is as simplistic as it is misleading. The problem of Boko Haram is progressing towards a critical point but before we start pointing accusing fingers, the statement of Alhaji Lai Mohammed should be borne in mind. According to him, “Boko Haram is a product of politics gone awry who perhaps, the threat we face today is a threat we are all guilty of contributing to”.
However, terrorism has come to stay due to the fact that poverty, unemployment, corruption, marginalization, exclusion/Deprivation and human insecurity are on the increase. Regressive government policies and environmental degradation especially in Niger Delta region if unchecked will continue to exacerbate the level of violence, murder, kidnapping and blowing up of oil pipelines which are the main stay of the nation’s economy. Religious intolerance and ethnic chauvinism is a fertilizer for terrorism to feed on. The level of intolerance among the world’s major religions has become the real time bomb for terrorism. Nigeria needs a comprehensive review of all religious activities and the patterns of operation for peace to reign. Unfortunately, many of our religious clerics have hijacked the podium to preach violence and hatred. Thus, a council for inter religious faith should be established in both the federal and state government as a way of mitigating or nipping in the bud terrorism.
