ABSTRACT

A Geotechnical assessment of soils in Idumowina gully erosion site was carried out in other to evaluate the susceptibility of the soil to erosion. Soil samples were collected with a hand auger from five (5) sampling points in the study area at a depth of 1.0meter. The geotechnical characterization of the soil samples analyzed in the Laboratory were Sieve analysis, Atterberg limit, Specific gravity, and Compaction tests. Findings revealed that the soils at the study location were predominantly clay and silt. The results of sieve analysis indicates that the percentage passing 75 micron sieve ranged from 37.7% to 53.5%. The liquid limit values ranged from 41.28% to 47.50%, while the plasticity index ranged from 20% to 22.15%. The values of specific gravity ranged from 2.26 to 2.55. The maximum dry density (MDD) values ranged from 1.67g/cm3 to 1.81g/cm3 , while the optimum moisture content (OMC) values ranged from 13.4% to 17.7%. This study showed that most soils at the sampling location were cohesive comprising mainly clay and silt indicating that intense weathering processes may have characterized the parent rock underlying the area and ultimately exposing the formations to erosion..
