ABSTRACT
Five (05) marble samples from Ubo and environs in Southwestern Nigeria were collected with the aim of determining their geochemical properties using XRF techniques. The results of the analysis revealed that the Ubo marble is calcitic with the presence of SiO2(0.09-47.54wt.%), CaO (26.11- 91.69wt.%), Al2O3 (1.71-7.82wt.%), Fe2O3 (0.07-5.01wt.%), MgO (4.16-7.49wt.%), Na2O (1.35- 11.15wt.%), K2O (0.04-2.82wt.%), MnO (0.01-0.20wt.%) and P2O5 (0.02-0.18wt.%), respectively. The ternary plots revealed possible minerals that might be present in the marble (calcite, dolomite and quartz). Based on the Industrial Specification of India – (ISI) the range of CaO expected for the manufacture of cement is (83.50 – 93.90%), also the L.S.F values shows that if BO3 and BO5 is subjected to beneficiation it can be used in the production of cement. BO1, BO2 and BO4 is suitable for cement production. Other uses of Ubo marble are for pesticide production, neutralization of sewage, soil liming and outdoor sculpture.
