ABSTRACT
Five (05) clay samples were obtained from Okada and its environs southern Nigeria with the aim to ascertain its suitability for refractory purpose. Samples were taken for mineralogical and geochemical analyses to determine their economic potentials. The results obtained showed the predominance of CaO (9.22 to 65.52wt.%), SiO2 (12.43 to 52.19wt.%), Fe2O3 (11.56 to 17.98wt.%), Al2O3 (7.14 to 16.63wt.%), with traces of TiO2 (0.84 to 2.37wt.%), K2O (0.37 to 2.19wt.%), P2O3 (0.02 to 2.07wt.%) and MnO (0.11 to 0.69wt.%), respectively. The mineralogical results showed the various dominant minerals which are Calcite (27 to 76%), Phlogopite (0.00 to 72.00%), Quartz (5.70 to 54.00%), Montmorillonite (3.10 to 33.00%), and Orthoclase (10.20 to 30.00%). The minor minerals present are Muscovite (7.00 to 13.90%), Illite (0.05 to 12.20%) and Kaolinite (5.50 to 7.00%). From the results obtained it shows that Okada clay is Montmorillonitic in nature and the minerals present reveals is not suitable for refractory purposes until beneficiation is done. However, it can be used for Brick Clay, Paints, Ceramics and Paper.
