GEO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION AND ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF GRANITE IN IYUKU

ABSTRACT

Granite, a common igneous rock composed primarily of quartz, feldspar, and mica, holds immense significance in both geological and economic contexts. Its chemical composition and unique physical properties have made it a highly sought-after material in various industries, including construction, architecture, and decorative arts. This study aims to explore the chemical characterization of granite and highlight its economic importance. The regional geology of Iyuku, Auchi in Edo State is a fascinating blend of geological formations that offer valuable insights into the area's geological history and natural resources. Situated in the southwestern part of Nigeria, Iyuku and its surroundings boast a diverse range of rock types, structural features, and geological processes that have shaped the landscape over millions of years. One water sample was collected from each hand-dug wells, making a total of up to 30 water samples all together. The samples were collected and placed in an insulated container and were properly labeled after which it was transported to the laboratory and stored at ambient temperature in a refrigerator for preservation. The major oxides analysed are SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, CaO, P2O5, K2O, MnO and MgO. The concentration of the SiO2 ranges from 50.891 to 54.431% with a mean and standard deviation values of 53.29±1.63, Al2O3 ranges from 13.057 to 14.61% with a mean and standard deviation values of 14.10±0.71, Fe2O3 ranges from 3.0142 to 3.3738% with a mean and standard deviation values of 3.20±0.18, TiO2 ranges from 0.251 to 0.251% with a mean and standard deviation values of 0.23±0.019, CaO ranges from 1.5369 to 2.8414% with a mean and standard deviation values of 2.18±0.71, P2O5 ranges from 0.1918 to 0.218% with a mean and standard deviation values of 0.21±0.021, K2O ranges from 2.8248 to 3.3337% with a mean and standard deviation values of 3.33±0.44, MnO ranges from 0.2095 to 0.2416% with a mean and standard deviation values of 0.22±0.016 and MgO ranges from 1.63 to 3.38% with a mean and standard deviation values of 2.57±0.72. In conclusion, granite's geochemical characterization provides valuable insights into its composition, while its economic xii importance spans various industries. By adopting sustainable practices, ensuring quality control, and exploring new markets and applications, the granite industry can continue to thrive while minimizing its environmental impact.
