GENDER IDENTITY EXPRESSION AND PROJECTION IN ORLU

ABSTRACT

This research on Linguistic Expression of Gender Identity in the Orlu Community, investigates the linguistic elements contributing to the expression of gender identity in the Orlu dialect, focusing on verbal communication and cultural distinctions that influence gender representation. The study employs a descriptive research design, drawing on Ethnography of Communication (EOC) theory proposed by Dell Hymes, to understand the social and cultural dimensions influencing language use in the Orlu context. EOC recognizes the social and cultural dimensions influencing language use, emphasizing the understanding of expressions in relation to the speech event or culture in which they are embedded. Through oral interviews, observation, introspection, and analysis of recorded spoken Orlu dialect, the study examines how gender identity is expressed, the linguistic features influencing gender expression, and how individuals project their gender through language. Taboos related to gender differences are also examined. The study reveals that linguistic elements in the Orlu dialect play important role in expressing gender identity. Euphemisms are employed to navigate taboos related to sexual organs, processes, and pregnancy, emphasizing on the cultural sensitivity surrounding these expressions. The linguistic features influencing gender expression include specific terms and expressions used to refer to male and female anatomy, often influenced by patriarchal norms. Individuals project their gender through language by adhering to these linguistic norms and avoiding explicit terms. Taboos are indeed manifested in gender differences, influencing linguistic choices and expressions related to gender identity.
