GENDER DISPARITY IN TEAR PRODUCTION AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

Tear production is crucial for the integrity of the eye. Low tear production is one of the causes of dry eyes which is greatly prevalent, causing ocular discomfort to millions around the world. However, there are still debates and controversies regarding whether or not there are gender disparities in tear production. Purpose: To determine whether there are gender disparities in tear production between males and females. Methodology: This study utilizes a cross sectional observational study design to assess the tear volume of 66 male and females participants using the Schirmer strip. Data Analysis: The Mann-Whitney's U test was utilized to determine whether there exists any gender disparity in tear volume between male and females. Results: The study found a statistically significant difference in tear volume between males and females (p<0.05), with females having higher tear volume. Conclusion: The study concluded that there gender plays a role in tear production. The findings necessitates more studies to explore the specific mechanism that brings about this effect.
