ABSTRACT
This article is a review on the importance of medicinal plants with Telfaira occidentalis as the major focus. It contains notes on the pharmacological and biological activities of T.occidentalis. Pharmacological activities such as its antioxidant, antidiabetic, haematological, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antimalaria, antimicrobial, are documented in this paper. It can be inferred that the ability of T.occidentalis to combat certain diseases is due to its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Oil from T.occidentalis powdered seedswas extracted using the cold-press extraction machine and petroleum ether. Scientific techniques such as gas chromatography and mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS) were used to analyse and determine the presence of certain organic and inorganic compounds in the extracted oil. Organic acids such as; n-hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and cis-vaccenic acid were determined while organic acid esters such as; methyl hexadecanoate, methyl cis-11-octadecanoate and methyl stearate were also present. Cyclotrisiloxane hexamethyl an organosilicon compound was also identified by GC-MS. These compounds have potentials and the medicinal properties should be harnessed both biological and industrial functions.
