ABSTRACT
This extensive research study explores the changing landscape of criminal activities in Edo State, Nigeria, specifically the shift from armed robbery to kidnapping for ransom. This transition signifies broader socio-economic and political changes and demonstrates the adaptability of criminal networks in the face of law enforcement strategies and new opportunities for illegal profits. The research initiates by offering a thorough historical background of crime trends in Edo State. It reviews the evolution of criminal activities, from minor thefts and localized banditry to more structured forms of crime, like armed robbery and, more lately, kidnapping for ransom. This historical context is essential to comprehend the socio-political factors that have contributed to the development and alteration of criminal operations in the region. Further chapters of the study delve into a detailed examination of the factors instigating this transition in crime. These catalysts include economic inequality, unemployment, political corruption, and the inadequacy of the criminal justice system. Each factor is scrutinized to comprehend how they interact to form a conducive setting for the progression of crime strategies. Particular attention is given to the change from armed robbery to kidnapping for ransom, viewed through the perspective of riskreward balances, shifts in public and police surveillance, and the emergence of "soft targets."The Study employs qualitative method to gather data from various sources including crime statistics and Interviews with people who knowledgeable about the subject matter. Furthermore, the research investigates the consequences of this criminal shift for local communities and its broader socio-economic repercussions on Edo State. It covers the psychological trauma inflicted on residents and the resulting social anxiety, as well as the economic disruptions caused by ransom kidnappings, which frequently victimize the economically active segment of the population. The concluding parts of the research present a set of tailored measures aimed at tackling these developing crime trends. Recommendations for policy makers, local leaders, and law enforcement bodies are provided, emphasizing preventive, responsive, and rehabilitative strategies. These strategies aim to dismantle the fundamental structures that sustain criminal networks.
