FRAUD AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to determine the relationship between fraud and performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. The objective of the study was to identify the relationship between fraud and total assets, total deposits and shareholders’ fund of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Data for the study was extracted from the financial records of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Cooperation from 2012 to 2021. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics, correlational analysis as well as the regression analysis using the eview software. The analysis carried out showed that; there is no significant relationship between fraud and total assets of deposit money banks in Nigeria; there is a positive and significant relationship between fraud and total deposits of deposit money banks in Nigeria and there is no significant relationship between fraud and deposit money banks in Nigeria. The study recommended that the management of DMBs should ensure adequate internal controls are put in place to advert or reduce the incidences of fraud within the banking sector in Nigeria; the Central Bank of Nigeria should ensure adequate sanctions for DMBs with high cases of fraud within the banking sector and the scope of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) should be expanded to cover deposited customers’ funds that were lost through fraud or fraud related activities in DMBs.
