ABSTRACT

Folklore performs various functions in today’s society, especially the function of preservation of culture and history of the people either by folksongs, folktale, riddles, or proverbs, and preserving the experience and history of these people. We have been able show in this essay that folklore through its standard elements preserves the history and culture of the people in these selected texts. In conclusion, we have been able to show that folklore perform socio-historical functions in the world. Apart from entertainment, while the reader enjoys the fascinating tales or the audience enjoys the melodious rhythm of these songs, they also teach morals, culture, and history in the process. From the content of this folkloric text, the reader/audience get to know some historical event(s) or a particular cultural practice(s) or believe(s) that are documented in such a text. These texts therefore, give the reader an insight into life, beliefs and cultures of the society.
