ABSTRACT
The study investigates the significant impact of flood risk on the accessibility of local feeder roads in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. The region's vulnerability to seasonal flooding has long been a concern for both residents and local authorities, as it disrupts essential transportation networks, hampers socio-economic activities, and poses threats to public safety. This research employs a multidisciplinary approach, combining hydrological modeling, and socio-economic analysis to comprehensively assess the flood-induced accessibility challenges in the study area.
The findings highlight the extent to which flood events have negatively affected the functionality of local feeder roads, rendering them impassable during the rainy season and severely restricting the mobility of the local population. Through the utilization of based flood mapping and vulnerability assessment, this study identifies the most flood-prone areas within Egor Local Government Area, aiding in the prioritization of flood risk mitigation efforts. Furthermore, a socioeconomic analysis reveals the economic repercussions of these accessibility constraints on the livelihoods of the affected communities.
The study underscores the need for proactive flood risk management and infrastructure development strategies to enhance the resilience of local feeder roads. It emphasizes the importance of integrating flood risk reduction measures into urban planning and development policies, aiming to minimize the adverse impact of flooding events on the accessibility and overall well-being of the local population. The findings and recommendations of this research can serve as valuable inputs for policymakers, urban planners, and disaster management agencies in addressing the complex challenge of flood risk in Egor Local Government Area and similar flood-prone regions.
