FISH FARMERS WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Information is vital to the survival of any agricultural enterprise and fish farming is a viable agricultural enterprise that is widely being practiced in Nigeria due to the high demand for fish. Hence, the study examined fish farmers’ willingness to pay for agricultural information in Edo State, Nigeria, and specifically described the socio-economic characteristics of fish farmers, examined the information needs of fish farmers, ascertained the willingness to pay for agricultural information, analyzed their perception influencing them to pay for agricultural information and identify the constraints to fish farming in the study area. Multi stage sampling procedure was used to sample 150 fish farmers using structured interview schedule and questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed by the use of descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation. Results showed that the mean age of the respondents was 44 years with both male and female participating in the fish farming activities.
