ABSTRACT

The study examines the effect of firm specific factors on the financial performance of twenty-one (21) listed insurance firms in Nigeria over the period 2012 – 2021. The goal of the study is to ascertain the effect of firm size, liquidity, leverage, earning per share and firm age on the financial performance of listed insurance firms. The study adopted the panel data regression techniques. The outcome of the study revealed that Firm size has a positive and significant effect on performance of listed insurance firms in Nigeria; Firm liquidity has a positive and insignificant effect on financial performance of listed insurance firms in Nigeria; Firm leverage has a negative and significant effect on the financial performance of listed insurance firms in Nigeria; Earnings per share have a positive and significant relationship with the financial performance of listed insurance firms in Nigeria; and Firm age has a positive and significant effect on the financial performance of listed insurance firms in Nigeria. The study however recommends that Nigerian insurance firms that are publicly traded should make their shares available for subscription to the general public; to increase their firms' profitability, insurance firms' management in Nigeria should reassess their liquidity management strategies.
