Abstract

Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system characterized by the inability to produce the clinical conception following a minimum of twelve months of consistent sexual activity without protection. Telfairia occidentalis is a plant placed in the family of Cucurbitaceae. One of the the largest and most significant vegetables grown in Nigeria is the fluted pumpkin. It is typically characterized to as a vegetable with leaves and seeds. The plant has been employed for many years in traditional medicine to treat infertility, fever, cardiovascular arrhythmia and conjunctivitis. The fertility drug Provironwas used to evaluate the fertility properties of the seed parts of Telfairia occidentalis plant. To evaluate fertility properties on body weight and male reproductive organ mass (testis), reproductive hormones such as Testosterone (TST), Estrogen 2 (E2) and Leuthenizing hormone and total sperm cell count, % progressive motility were employed. The result obtained from phytochemistry study revealed the presence of glycosides, carbohydrates and saponin. The fertility study revealed a noteworthy increase in the body weight and male reproductive organ mass (testis), reproductive hormones such as Testosterone (TST), Estrogen 2 (E2) and Leuthenizing hormone and total sperm cell count, % progressive motility indicating fertility activity of the extract at dosage concentration of 500 as well as1000 mg/kg. It can be concluded the phytochemical compounds present in Telfairia occidentalis can promote pregnancy and possesses fertility properties.
