ABSTRACT

Picralima nitida, a member of the Apocynaceae family, is a noteworthy African pepper tree renowned for its medicinal attributes. These medicinal plants encompass a diverse array of botanical species often employed in herbalism. They serve as a valuable repository of bioactive compounds, including tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and phenols, which hold immense promise for applications in pharmaceutical synthesis and development. Among these medicinal plants, Picralima nitida stands out as an exemplary candidate, offering a plethora of therapeutic potentials, encompassing antimicrobial, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic functions. This study is dedicated to exploring the phytochemical composition and antioxidant capabilities of the aqueous and ethanol extracts derived from P. nitida's stem bark, utilizing established methodologies. The research endeavors to unravel the in vitro radical scavenging properties of Picralima nitida against ferric oxide. Notably, the ethanol extract of P. nitida's stem bark demonstrated robust antioxidant activity. These discoveries underscore the substantial potential of P. nitida's stem bark as a natural source of antioxidants and essential minerals, thereby serving as a valuable resource for the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals.
