Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of feeder height on feeding behaviour and feed wastage in rabbit production. The study was carried out using 40 mixed breeds of rabbits in a Completely Randomized Design comprising 10 replicates per treatments. The treatments were Wooden hutch + Earthen feeder (control group), Metallic hutch + Feeder at floor level (0 inch), Metallic hutch + feeder at 2 inches from floor level, Metallic hutch + feeder at 4 inches from floor level. The behaviour of rabbits were observed daily and recorded using a Likert scale form. Data were collected on daily feed intake and feed wastage. The data collected was subjected to analysis using the GENSTAT statistical package 12th edition. The study showed a significant difference (p<0.05) in daily and total feed wastage between control group and other treatment groups. It was also observed that rabbits in higher feeder groups exhibited difficulty accessing feeders, elevated feeders reduced urination and defecation within feeders and discouraged rodent entry. The study therefore concluded elevated feeders can optimize feed intake efficiency, minimize wastage, and improve hygiene and pest control, potentially enhancing rabbit welfare and farm productivity.
