ABSTRACT
The question of whether states in the federal state of Nigeria should have their police force has become a hot-button issue in recent times. Undoubtedly, maintaining order, security of life, legality, development, and democracy can be difficult without a police role in a given country. This paper examines federalism as a structural configuration of the Nigerian state and the establishment and structure of the Nigeria Police Force. Antagonist and Protagonist arguments regarding the establishment of state police. The crux of this research is to examine the challenges and implications of state police if initiated and how the current security architecture was able to curb insecurity. The study unraveled that if state police got established, it would be a mere tool in the hands of state actors or governors to nurse and execute their ambitions and if not properly managed it would bring about unhealthy rivalry and competition among the current security apparatus.
