ABSTRACT
Herbal formulations typically combine different plants to maximize their therapeutic benefits, and this approach is common in many parts of the world, including Nigeria. The goal of this study is to assess the polyherbal formulation, which includes Citrus limon, Curcuma longa, Zingiber officinale, Allium sativum, and Moringa oleifera, for its fatty acid content and in vivo anti-inflammatory properties. The fatty acid content was assessed using GC-MS. Anti-inflammatory property was evaluated using carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice and xylene-induced ear edema in mice. GCMS identified three fatty acids: octadec-9-enoic acid (0.113%), 16-octadecanoic acid methyl ester (0.094%), and hexadecanoic acid (0.522%). When mice were given carrageenan to cause paw edema, the polyherbal tea at 10 mg/kg and the standard (aspirin, 100 mg/kg) both decreased the size of the inflammation compared to the control group (*P < 0.05; **P < 0.01) and increased the percentage of inflammation inhibition. The polyherbal formulated tea at 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, and standard (Dexamethasone, 1 mg/kg) reduced the weight of the ear when compared to water control (*P < 0.05; **P < 0.01). Conclusively, the fatty acids present in the polyherbal tea are 9-octadecanoic acid, 16-octadecanoic acid, methyl ester, and hexadecanoic acid.
