FAMILY SIZE, OCCUPATION AND EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION AS PREDICTORS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

The study sought to investigate family size, occupation and educational qualification as predictors of primary school pupils' academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. In order to effectively carry out this study, four research questions were raised. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and the population of the study consisted 60 pupils. The research instrument was a checklist which was validated and the reliability was not necessary. The data collected were analyzed using the univariate analysis of variance at 0.05 level of significance. This was used for research question one to three, while regression statistics was used for research question four. Based on the findings, research question one was that the family size had a nonsignificant impact on the pupils' academic though, it contributed about 3.5% to pupils' academic performance but the impact was not significant. It was recommended that parents should not have more than five children, at most five children. Parents should try as much as possible for them to be educated. Government and other stakeholders in education should provide financial assistance and scholarships to families from lower socio-economic backgrounds, enabling them to offer better educational needs for their children.
