ABSTRACT
This study examined family background as a correlate for socialization in young children in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. To guide the study, five research questions were raised and answered. The population of the study comprises of the public and private primary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area Edo state. The instrument for this study was the questionnaire; the survey research was used for this study and data was analyzed using the standard deviation and mean score analysis.
The findings of the study were; the quality of the home environment influences the socialization of children. The parental socioeconomic status (SES) does not hold any association with socialization among children in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, based on location. Parental religious affiliation or practices does not have any significant relationship with children socialization. There is a vital association between parental academic backgrounds and children’s social adjustment. There is no significant association between parental ethnic background and children’s socialization.
Based on this findings the following recommendations were made; Programs and workshops should be developed to help parents understand the importance of engaging in their children's activities, emphasizing both academic and non-academic pursuits. Policy makers should develop initiatives to support families in creating conducive physical spaces at home. Parenting programs should include components on emotional intelligence and stress management to help parents create positive emotional climates at home. Parents should be guided on how to establish and enforce clear rules and guidelines that promote a balanced environment of structure and warmth. Opportunities for children to interact with family and peers should be encouraged through community events and social programs.
