FACTORS OF MASS FAILURE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE: A CASE STUDY OF SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA SOUTH WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the factors of mass failure in English language using Ovia South West as a case study in Edo State. The research method used is the descriptive survey method. Three (3) research questions were raised; Are there sufficient numbers of qualified English language teachers and instructional materials for teaching English language? Does the previous socio-economic background of the students affect them in studying English language? Do the poor attitude and low interest of students towards the nature of English language contribute deeply to their mass failure in WAEC & NECO especially in English language? The population of this study consisted of all senior secondary school students in Udo Mixed Commercial Secondary School which is used to represent the Ovia South West Local Government of Edo State. A total of 450 students which comprises SS1-3 in the 2024 section. A structured questionnaire was used to collect responses from respondents. The research instrument was validated by a graduate of the University of Nsukka. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed. After analysis, results were displayed on tables showing responses, including the decision made. The findings of this study revealed different factors contributing to the reason for this concept, they are; background factors, student factors, teachers’ factors, and school factors. One conclusion drawn from this study is that the school lacks a balanced ratio of English language teachers.
