FACTORS MILITATING AGAINST THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF FINE AND APPLIED ARTS IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN CONSULTANCY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

This study was set to investigate the Factors Militating against the Effective Teaching and Learning of Fine and Applied Arts in University of Benin Consultancy School (UCS). To this end, four research questions and hypothesis were generated. The researcher employed the descriptive survey design method. The sample for the study comprised one hundred (100) students offering art subject in University of Benin Consultancy School (UCS) ranging from JSS 1-3 to SS 1-3. The instruments for data collection were multiple choice and alternative response test questions and a questionnaire on demographic data of respondents. The instruments were validated by three experts, comprising an art educator, measurements and evaluating officer alongside a vocational and technical educator. For the internal consistency of the instrument, test of reliability was established. The findings reveals that there are factors hindering the effective teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Arts. The study also show that there are effective factors and suggestions used to enhance teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Arts. In addition, the study revealed that there are implications of ineffective teaching on students offering Fine and Applied Arts such as poor motivation, poor performance and lack of confidence. The study also revealed the roles of the school and the art teacher in improving the teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Arts in University of Benin Consultancy School (UCS). Therefore, nine (9) recommendation were generated. It was recommended that school administrators and government should prioritize the allocation of adequate resources and materials for art education, promotion of positive attitudes and perceptions, Continuous professional development programs, create supportive and inclusive learning environments amongst others.
