FACTORS INFLUENCING THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF HISTORY IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

This study investigates examine the factors that influence the teaching of History in public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of this study consists of all JSS 1 (one) students in the Public Junior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State with a total of five hundred and twenty-seven (527) JSS 1 students. A sample size consisting of 100 (one hundred) JSS 1 students was used for this study. The Instrument for data collection is a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher titled “Factors Influencing the Teaching of History in Public Junior Secondary Schools Questionnaire” (FITHPSCQ). Data obtained from the questionnaire administered were analyzed using percentage, mean statistics and standard deviation. A critical mean of 2.5 was adopted in line with the rating scale, mean response of 2.5 and above was regarded as Agree while responses receiving mean score less than 2.5 were regarded as Disagree. The findings showed that the teaching of History as a subject in secondary schools was influenced by a variety of factors such as instructional materials, availability of qualified History teachers, school location, it was also discovered that teachers gender does not influence learning outcome of students in History. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that qualified history education teachers should be employed to teach history education.
