FACTORS INFLUENCING TEACHERS’ MOTIVATION AND STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study was majorly to identify factors influencing teachers’ motivations and student performance in public senior secondary schools in Edo State, Nigeria. This study was guided by the following objectives; to examine relationship between teachers’ fringe benefits and students’ academic performance, to investigate the relationship between teachers' professional development and students’ academic performance, to identify the relationship between teachers' remuneration and students’ academic, and to ascertain the impact of teachers’ salary on students’ academic performance. The study employed the descriptive design; questionnaires were applied in order to collect data. Primary sources were used for data collection. The respondents under the study were 115 teachers from the selected secondary schools in Nigeria. Data collected was presented using the mean and standard deviation. Findings from the study revealed that there is a relationship between teachers' remuneration and students’ academic performance, and also revealed that there is a relationship between teachers' professional development and students’ academic performance. Based on this finding, the study recommends that staff welfare packages should be perceived as of utmost importance by the ministry of education in order to enhance attitudinal development and the maintenance of peace and orderliness in the schools.
