ABSTRACT

The study investigated the factors influencing students’ career choice in Library and Information Science in University of Benin, Benin City. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred (100) respondents in Library and Information Science which were randomly selected from 100-400 level. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using frequency count and percentages. The findings from the study include that students’ interest constitute a significant factor influencing students’ career choice in Library and Information Science. It was concluded that peer group influence, family background, students’ environment and students’ interest constituted the factors influencing students’ career choice in Library and Information Science in University of Benin, Benin City. The study recommended among others that school counselling should be able to educate the students so as to be aware of various environmental factors that might be influencing their career choice.
