ABSTRACT
The study investigated the factors influencing students’ career choice in Economics and Statistics in Faculty of Education, University of Benin. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred (100) respondents in Economics and Statistics which were randomly selected from 100-400 level. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation.
The findings from the study include that students’ environment constitute a significant factor influencing students’ career choice in Economics and Statistics. It was concluded that peer group influence, family background, students’ environment and students’ interest constituted the factors influencing students’ career choice in Economics and Statistics in University of Benin, Benin City
The study recommended that school counseling should be able to educate the students so as to be aware of various environmental factors that might be influencing their career choice. It was also recommended that students not to be forced to select career by their parents and teachers but be guided on the career path they wish to pursue.
