FACTORS INFLUENCING SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS INTEGRATION AND USE OF DIGITAL TOOLS IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS

ABSTRACT

This study examined the factors influencing secondary school teachers' integration and use of digital tools in teaching mathematics in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The study was specifically carried out to ascertain the digital tools available for use in the teaching and learning of mathematics, the attitude of teachers to the integration and use of digital tools, the extent to which the integration of digital tools affect the teaching of mathematics and the performance of the students, the factors influencing the integration and use of digital tools in mathematics and the problems encountered in the use of digital tools in teaching mathematics. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed. The population size consists of mathematics teachers of the 174 secondary schools in Ovia North-East LGA and the sample size was 60 teachers from 5 selected schools. Self-constructed questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. The result of the findings reveals that teachers have a positive attitude to the integration and use of digital tools in teaching mathematics and this influences the integration and use of digital tools. The study further revealed that digital tools are available for use in selected schools and the use of digital tools enhances the teaching of mathematics in these schools. Therefore, it is recommended that schools should properly maintain, maximize and utilize the tools available at their disposal for effective teaching and learning of mathematics.
