ABSTRACT

 This study investigates the factors influencing participation in Adult Education programmes in Benin Metropolis  To achieve this, three research questions were raised.

 The research design adopted for this study is descriptive survey. The population of the study comprised of one thousand, five hundred and fifty (1550) University of Benin students from eight (8) Departments in Faculty of Education.  However, one hundred  respondents were taken from Faculty of Education through a simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was designed to gather responses from the respondents. The data collected were analyzed using Frequency count and mean and standard deviation..

 The results gotten showed that  adult education programmes are available in Benin metropolis to a high extent, the level of participation of learners in adult education programmes in Benin metropolis is high and the factors influencing learners’ participation in adult education programmes includes financial constraint, learners work schedule, Socio cultural background and status of adult  learners Among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that adequate funding: governments at all levels should allocate adequate funds to adult and non-formal education sector in order to carry along its programmes effectively and efficiently and more centers and programmes should be established and also makes it affordable to all interesting adult learners or in some programmes like the Basic and Post literacy programmes be free at all the states of the Federation
