ABSTRACT

Sports and exercises are physical activities that are important to engage in because of the numerous benefits. However, students show low or negative attitude towards sports and exercises due to different factors which influence their attitude. This study was carried out to investigate the factors influencing attitude towards sports and exercises among University of Benin Human Kinetics and Sports Science students. The study comprised of students in year two, three and four of the department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science in the university of Benin. Four research questions were raised for the study and descriptive survey research design was adopted. Simple random sampling techniques was used to select the sample size (60) from the population. The data was collected with questionnaire instruments and analysed using percentage. The findings of the study revealed that most of the students indicated their interest in sport and exercise as a result of being a student of the department of human kinetics and sports science. Also, they engaged in sports and exercises because of the health benefits. In addition, students who had taken part in individual or team sports did not take part because of social recognition, and lack of confidence was not a reason for not participating in sports and exercises. Students engaged in sports for the purpose of learning a new skill and for improving physical fitness. The study also showed that positive attitude towards participating in sports and exercises was as a result of exposure to knowledge in the various career areas within the field of Human Kinetics and Sports Science. They also affirmed that participating in sports and exercises is not a barrier to achieving academic excellence. Furthermore, support from family and friends impacted in student's motivation to engage in sports and exercises. Based on the findings, respondents showed that media portrayal of athletes and fitness enthusiasts have not Influence their attitude towards sports and exercises positively.
