FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH MASS FAILURE OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN HISTORY IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the factors associated with mass failure of junior secondary school students in History in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, six research questions were raised and examined. The research design adopted for this study is the survey research design. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 junior secondary school students. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. An analysis of data was done using frequency count and simple percentage. The findings from the study include that there is a significant relationship between teaching methods used by history teachers and students academic performance in history in junior secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo State. It was concluded that the factors responsible for mass failure of junior secondary school students in history examination in Egor local government area of Edo State include unconducive learning environment, poor teaching methods, lack of availability of resources, overcrowded class size and lack of teachers’ mastery of subject matter. The study among others recommended that government should ensure that there only qualified History teachers who have a strong grasp of the subject matter are employed.
