FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH HYGIENE PRACTICES OF MOTHERS OF CHILDREN ATTENDING WELL-BABY CLINICS

ABSTRACT

Background: In 2019, it was estimated that each year nearly 7.7 million children under five years die around the world; out of which approximately 3.1 million of the children die during the infant period and almost all these (99%) deaths occur in the developing countries due to lack of access to improved water and sanitation. Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by United Nations in 2015, the 6th goal, target (No. 6.2) states that all countries aim to achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030.17 Majority of low income countries are far behind achieving this goal mainly because of climate change, corruption amongst government officials and poor political will Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude, practice and factors affecting hygiene practices of mothers of children attending well-baby clinic in Egor LGA, Benin City. Methodology: This study utilized a descriptive cross-sectional design. A total of 630 mothers attending well-baby clinics in Egor local government area, were selected using a multistage sampling technique. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for this study. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 25, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Results: A higher proportion of respondents, 307 (48.7%) were between the ages of 25 and 29, with a mean age of 27.2 ± 3.7 years. Out of the 630 respondents, 564 (89.5%) had good knowledge of hygiene practice, 608 (96.5%) had positive attitude towards hygiene practice and 547 (86.8%) had good practices of hygiene. It was identified that level of education, occupation and socioeconomic status were associated with the knowledge, while for attitude, level of education and household income were strongly associated. XIV Conclusion: Majority of the respondents has good knowledge of hygiene practices among mothers attending well-baby clinic. Majority of the respondents has positive attitude of hygiene practices among mothers attending well-baby clinic. Majority of the respondents has good practices of hygiene among mothers attending well-baby clinic. It was identified that level of education, household income and socioeconomic status were the determinant affecting the knowledge, attitude and practice of hygiene practices among mothers attending well-baby clinics.
