FACTORS AFFECTING THE LOW PERFORMANCE OF HISTORY STUDENTS IN JUNIOR SECONDARY IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to determine "factors affecting the low performance of history students in junior secondary in Ovia north east local government". The specific purpose of this Study is to identify the factors influencing the low performance of history students in Junior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government. To assess the effectiveness of current teaching methodologies and curriculum design in history education. To explore the socio- economic factors affecting students’ academic performance in history subjects. The population of the study consist of two thousand seven hundred and sixty (2760) JSSII students from the 14 public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. (Edo State Ministry of Education, Student Enrolment Record, 2023). The sample size selected for this study is one hundred and twenty five (125) JSSII students, selected randomly using simple random sampling technique. Findings from the study revealed that there is a consensus among students on the importance of certain factors in their performance in history teaching methods and approaches in history education are more effective than others in enhancing student understanding and performance. Several factors can have a significant impact on students' performance in history. Based on the findings from the study, addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach involving government intervention, community engagement, teacher training, and the provision of adequate resources. By improving the overall educational environment and making history more accessible and engaging, it is possible to enhance the performance of history students in junior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area, the following recommendations are made that There should be a greater emphasis on student-centered learning.
