ABSTRACT
Vocational education is essential for preparing students with the practical skills
needed for workforce readiness and national economic growth. However, despite its
importance, vocational programs in Nigerian universities, including the University of
Benin, continue to face significant challenges. This study explores the key factors
affecting the effective teaching and learning of vocational courses at the University of
Benin, with a focus on infrastructure, teacher qualifications, funding, curriculum
relevance, and government support. Using a descriptive survey approach, data were
gathered from 104 students enrolled in vocational and technical programs. The findings
reveal several obstacles, including outdated facilities, insufficient funding, a lack of
industry-experienced instructors, and an outdated curriculum that does not align with
current job market demands. To improve vocational education, the study emphasizes the
need for better investment in infrastructure, regular curriculum updates, enhanced
teacher training, and stronger policy implementation. By addressing these issues,
vocational education can better equip graduates with the skills necessary for employment,
entrepreneurship, and meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s economic development. The
study offers recommendations to strengthen vocational education at the University of
Benin and similar institutions across the country
