FACTORS AFFECTING THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES (A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF BENIN)

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to investigate the factors affecting the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses. The design of the study is descriptive while the population comprised Vocational and Technical Education students in University of Benin. The sample size was 100 to 400 level Vocational and Technical Education students totaling 50 respondents while a researchers’ self-developed questionnaire formed the instrument for data collection. The supervisor and two experts validated the instrument. Three research questions guided the study. A review of empirical studies was carried out to guide the researcher into previous studies in the area and also to provide the researcher with theoretical base. A 20-item questionnaire was used to obtain information from the respondents. The questionnaire is organized into two sections. The questionnaire is organized into two sections, Section A and section B. Section A seeks relevant information about the respondents while Section B comprises 20-item to solicit information from the respondents on the factors affecting the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education in Nigerian Universities (A case study of University of Benin, Benin city). The questionnaire had four point Likert rating scale of Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Strongly Disagree (SD) and Disagree (D). Based on the data collected and analyzed, the following results were obtained that poor policy implementation is one of the factors affecting the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses. The findings also revealed that lack of Information communication technology is a factor affecting the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses. It also revealed that brain drain is another factor affecting the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses. Based on the above, it was recommended that effective policy like stakeholders collaborations should be implemented, initiatives to expand internet infrastructure should be made. Brain drain should be reduced by fostering a supportive and conducive work environment that values the contribution of skilled professional.
