ABSTRACT
This research is a sociolinguistic investigation, examine the factors of language choice in a multilingual society using Benin city as a case study. The focus of this study is to investigate how contexts situations, of language use determine the language choice of language users in a multilingual society. This study attempts to present various language use contexts and situations (i.e. circumstances surrounding a particular language use) and how these context determine language choices one makes.
This study is on the socio-linguistic aspect of language study, in this research the researcher caries out descriptive analysis. In this analysis, the language phenomena under focus is examined and described in a systematically explicit manner. The data analyzed in this study were collected through direct observation and questionnaire methods of data collection.
This study comprises of four chapters, chapter one is on the introduction of the study, purpose of study, research methodology, and significance of study. Relevant literature as well as basic research concepts is reviewed in the chapter two. Data analyses are carried out in the chapter three of this research as well as discussions made. Chapter four of this research is on the findings and conclusions of the research.
