ABSTRACT
Many government programmes are geared towards the achievement of Universal Healthcare for all citizens based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by year 2030. The measure of healthcare productivity in Nigeria, especially in Enugu State is becoming an issue of concern nowadays. As a departure from previous studies which focused on out-patients, this study examines the connection between health workers’ attitude and in-patients’ recovery and its implications for productivity in selected Healthcare facilities in Enugu metropolis. To achieve the objectives of the study, three hypotheses were formulated. Survey method was adopted as the research design. Three (3) selected Federal tertiary and health facilities in Enugu Metropolis were used for data collection. The accessible population of the study includes (2,308) clinical health workers. Taro Yamane technique was used to determine a sample size of 341 health workers comprising 72 doctors, 224 nurses, and 45 physiotherapists. The research instrument used is a 15-item questionnaire titled “Attitude, Negligence and Practice of Care of Inpatients’ recovery (ANPCIPR)” designed in a four-point Likert scale. Test-re-test technique was used to ascertain the reliability of the research instrument at 0.84 correlation coefficient. Mean statistic technique was used to examine the responses to the research questions, while Chi-square technique was used to test the hypotheses of the study. Findings reveal that there is no significant relationship between negligence by health workers and in-patients’ recovery. Health workers’ aggression does not significantly relate to in-patients’ recovery. Workplace hostilities affect health workers’ productivity. Based on the findings in this study, it is recommended that health care workers should not only be encouraged by their employers, but also by the immediate communities and society in which they operate. This will go a long way in improving their morale, confidence and trust in the handling of in-patients’ care. Keywords: Health workers, In-patients, Attitude, Productivity.
