ABSTRACT

This research investigates the antimicrobial potential of clay minerals, with a focus on elucidating specific findings. The study aimed to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values for selected clay samples against a diverse range of microorganisms, understand their mechanisms of action, and compare their efficacy with conventional antimicrobial agents. Remarkably, Aforwa Black exhibited notable antimicrobial properties. It displayed an MIC of 12.5 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus, highlighting its ability to inhibit this bacterium effectively. Additionally, Aforwa Black exhibited an MIC of 25 mg/ml against MethicillinResistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), demonstrating moderate efficacy against this antibiotic-resistant strain. Furthermore, it demonstrated a substantial MIC of 6.25 mg/ml against Bacillus strains, signifying its potent bactericidal activity. However, Aforwa Black's impact on Candida species remained inconclusive in our study. Uzalla Dark presented diverse antimicrobial effects. It displayed an MIC of 25 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus, indicating the concentration required for effective inhibition. Conversely, no definitive MIC values were observed for MRSA and Bacillus strains, suggesting limited antimicrobial effects. Against Candida, Uzalla Dark demonstrated an MIC of 25 mg/ml, indicating potential but requiring a higher concentration for efficacy. Okada Light exhibited selective antimicrobial activity. It did not show inhibitory effects against the bacterial strains tested. However, Okada Light displayed an MIC of 6.25 mg/ml against Candida, highlighting its bactericidal efficacy against this fungal species. Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis unveiled the mineral composition of these clay samples. Okada Light predominantly comprised Montmorillonite (55%) and Quartz (25%). Aforwa Black contained Kaolinite (34%) and Quartz (42%), among other minerals. Uzalla Dark was rich in Kaolinite (37%) and Quartz (52%), with additional minerals such as Muscovite, Albite, Anatase, Illite, and Orthoclase. In conclusion, this research underscores the selective antimicrobial properties of the tested clay samples. Aforwa Black displayed remarkable efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, and Bacillus strains, while Uzalla Dark exhibited efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida. Okada Light demonstrated specific bactericidal activity against Candida. These findings highlight the potential applications of these clay minerals in targeted antimicrobial treatments, pending further investigation into their mechanisms and therapeutic possibilities in medicine.
