ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study was to look into how different concentration of Brewery effluent affects the morphology of Pontederia crassipes. To conduct this experiment samples of the aquatic macrophytes were gotten from Ovia River in Edo state. The experimental treatments included 5%,10%,15%,and 20%v/v in addition to the control 0%. The plants were given three replicates of each treatment over the course of ten days using a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Samples of P.crassipes grown in brewery effluent demonstrated a significant decline in all morphological parameters (p 0.05 )in contrast to the control. Some of the plants exposed to 20% v/v and 15% v/v exhibited wilting, chlorosis, and necrosis. The number of leaves and the diameter of leaves in the control and 5% had the highest values while the 15% and 20% had the least value. The Chlorophyll content index value in 0% and 10% had the highest while 15% and 20% had the Lowest.  According to the study’s observation the plants' phosphate levels noticeably rose, with the roots having a higher concentration than the shoots. Brewery waste had an impact on the macrophytes at higher concentrations. Through this research, it was shown that Pontederia crassipes can be employed as a bioremediating agent and to biomonitor the presence of brewery effluent in freshwater ecosystems.
